John Quinn –

I think you mean awesome.

John Quinn

Indeed she is but she’s retired now and more of a consultant on rebellious behaviour. Though best not use the ‘r’ word in her presence.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_O%27Malley

https://www.historyireland.com/…/grainne-mhaol-pirate-queen-of-connacht-behind-th…

John Quinn

It’s about roots and turbulent times and love which endures and more…but I was also trying to create characters whose values are out of sync with the world around them but refuse to be cowed. They use their intelligence wit and humour to deal with it.

John Quinn,

I’m not Farrell Golden although it is a family name in my family tree. So I’d be lying if I said there aren’t autobiographical elements there. Probably more than I’m comfortable with admitting.

John Quinn

No comment. AS for a day in Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital?  Morning at the National Museum of Scotland followed by a pub lunch at Maggie Dickson’s in the Grassmarket or the Abbotsford on Rose Street. Walking round the city rounded off with some live music in the evening at Sandy Bell’s pub. With Shey of course…..

John Quinn,

I tried the usual routes and got what might be termed a modicum of interest. I was going to self-publish but then….oops that involves Shey…   Sorry. Did I say something wrong? I think the important thing as with so much in life is to have faith in yourself and keep going. As for what I am doing. How kind to ask.  I’m about 10,000 words into another novel, also  I’m working with a musician I know to write song lyrics which I hope will in due course become an album to raise money for a child poverty initiative in Dundee .. Lastly…more poetry.

Available Amazon UK 99p and Amazon US 1.29c

State … Security … Secrets …

Scotland 1972. A turbulent place – miners’ strikes, blackouts, Clyde shipyard workers defying the British Government, oil discovered in the North Sea and the long and deadly arms of conflict in Ireland reaching across the Irish Sea.

Farrell Golden is a bright working class kid from Dundee with an Irish heritage. But he hasn’t always paid it much attention. Thanks to his family he’s made it to the University of Edinburgh against the odds. But does he want to stay there?

There’s beer and there’s women – in particular a beautiful ethereal English girl called Maggie. She’s out of the London stockbroker belt but she’s not all that she seems. Then there’s an Irish girl who is somehow familiar …

Roisin O’Malley’s not like any trainee teacher Farrell’s ever seen. What is she getting away from in Edinburgh? What are her family’s links to the Troubles? What of her ex-boyfriend?

At a Bloody Sunday protest march Farrell sees Roisin in trouble and goes to help. He’s knocked unconscious. When he wakens up he finds he’s stepped down a rabbit hole of Irish history, family ties and state security. Is there a way back? Should he have paid more attention to the family heritage? Who is Roisin O’Malley really?

About John Quinn

John Quinn’s  Twitter profile tells him he’s a persistent Dundonian, left footer, ex-teacher, global justice worrier and “wid be scriever.” His poetry has appeared in numerous publications including Poetry Scotland, Northwords Now, Mind the Time, and Lallans. He has performed his work including slam poetry in various places ranging from public parks to coffee shops and pubs. However, unlike his Dundonian predecessor, Oor Wullie McGonagall, he has found that to date, people have only thrown words at him. He is also the author of the play ‘O Halflins an Hecklers an Weavers an Weemin’ about the history of Jute and its impact on the City of Dundee. In 2017 the play was performed in the High Mill at Verdant Works Museum accompanied by the music of Michael Marra. John Quinn lives above the River Tay with his wife.

Five Secret Things About

For The Love Of A Gypsy

By Madelyn Hill

Sharing secrets is fun! Here are my top five secrets behind For The Love Of A Gypsy…

#5 Irishman! YAY!

DarkAvengingAngel72lg

Who can resist an Irish Rogue? Not me! I love looking for inspiration and Pierce Bronson was the perfect mix of a masculine and mischievous that I was looking for in Declan.

#4 An Innocent Heroine

zrusolga68989898

DSCF4154

My Gypsy heroine, Martine is an innocent heroine who wants to know more, do more, but has no idea how. When I found this picture, I knew Anne Hathaway was the perfect inspiration. She trains dogs and can spar with her brother, which makes her intelligent as well!

#3 Gypsies

zweddha

zwe6silv

zwe660000000

This is something romantic about the nomadic lifestyle of a Gypsy. Once I delved into the research, I found that they are an interesting, noble people.

#2 Ireland

zlit

IRELAND!!!!!

Ahhh, Ireland. I just can’t tell you how much I love all things Irish. While I’m part Irish, there is something about the country that truly speaks to me. And it helps that the accent is so charming.

#1 Titles

For The Love Of A Gypsy was always the working title of this story. That’s how I work, I come up with a title and it truly directs my story. I’ve never changed any of the titles and I hope I’ll never have to!

Bio:
Madelyn Hill has always loved the written word. From the time she could read and all through her school years, she’d sneak books into her textbooks during school. And she devoured books daily. At the age of 10 she proclaimed she wanted to be a writer. After being a “closet” writer for several years, she sent her manuscripts out there and is now published with Soul Mate Publishing. And she couldn’t be happier! A resident of Western New York, she moved from one Rochester to another Rochester to be with the love of her life. They now have 3 children and keep busy cooking, watching their children’s sporting events, and of course reading!
EXTRACT

A rider urged his horse forward. He wore a leather doublet of a quality she’d never seen. The black hide was pierced with metal and thick stitching formed elaborate Celtic designs. Regal and rich. His breeches hugged his thighs so closely ’twas indecent, but that didn’t stop her gaze from venturing along the hard expanse of his legs. Heat crept up her neck and flushed her face like a flame.

He tipped his head in her brother’s direction. Martine gasped.

The stranger from the glen.

“We’ve business,” was all he said.

Rafe nodded, but didn’t twitch a muscle. Martine wanted to run from the confrontation, hide in her grandmother’s berth safe from the bewitching blue eyes of the intruder. But her feet stayed rooted to the ground.

Och, this man was handsome. Strong jaw, brilliant eyes, and a broad mouth composed a man so striking. His face was a composite of hard planes of granite that matched the intense glare of his eyes.

The man sighed and his comrades inched closer to his side. They dressed as he did, except their clothing lacked the obvious quality she could see stitched in the leather of his.

“The villagers are concerned with your presence, Gypsy.”

She could feel the tension in the tight line of her brother’s shoulders, taste the anger in the air that hummed about him and the stranger. His jaw clenched and he remained silent.

“I’ve come to ask you to leave.”

Noelle’s book isn’t out till June 30th but I am sure she won’t mind us having a sneak peek at her cover and blurb.  And maybe she will come back with a wee Irish story for us.

zmedi80000

James of the Glen? Well, James was a Scotsman famous for being wrongly accused and hung for the murder of The Red Fox.

zmedi800bobobb

zdono6

zmedw

The Red Fox, was of course a government factor of estates forfeited after the Battle of Culloden when the British government wanted to wipe the Highland people off the face of the earth by any means possible. He was shot dead by an unknown gunman while on his way to evict Glen Duror’s farming tenants. The Government demanded blood and who better to arrest than James Stewart, veteran of Culloden and organiser of the opposition to the Red Fox.   The story was the inspiration behind the book Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson. kidnappedAnd the photos well above are of James’s actual birthplace in Glen Duror. It’s a very nice walk to the bothy. Quite the spot to camp in if you are into bothies.

zmedwduro

AND there are other walks associated with what is known as the Appin Murder. There’s the Duror walk from Ballachulish to Glen Duror, if you fancy a nice long trek

zmedwdu676767676

and there’s the Brecklet Trail, if you’re not so sure about that.

I leave you with Noelle’s book.

HONOR’S PROMISE (Liam’s Journey) by Noelle Clark. Release Date 30 June 2015

Loyalty and love define Liam. But will obligations to family and farm get in the way of him finding true happiness?

BLURB

Loyalty is high on Liam Cullen’s agenda, but lately he’s been feeling restless. He wants to run away from the endless routines of life on the family farm. He contemplates busting free of the sometimes suffocating confines of the close-knit family. He’d like to see the world. Maybe meet a few girls.

Riddled with guilt that he could even consider such a thing, the final blow comes when Liam’s abilities as a first rate farmer are questioned. He sees red and his quick temper is sorely stretched. He struggles inner demons and attempts to fight the inevitable – until he meets the girl with the blue-green eyes and the copper-colored hair.

Without knowing it, Aislin O’Neill sweeps Liam off his feet, and transports him to a place he’s only ever dreamed of. It’s soon apparent that Aislin has her own inner battles. Will she break her self-imposed vow to never get involved with anyone again?

EXTRACT

A couple of hours later, Liam pulled up out the front of the home he shared with his mam and brother. The only home he’d ever known. He knew every square inch of the house, the gardens, all the outbuildings and sheds, and most likely every grain of soil as well. It was his home and he loved it. He loved his family. He turned the ignition key and cut the engine. But had he missed any of it while he’d been away in Cork?

The answer turned like a knife in his chest. If he’d been a married man, maybe even with children of his own, he would have been like Kevin and rushed off as soon as he could to get back home. To kiss his wife, hoist his children high up on his shoulders and give them some chocolates or other little treats he’d bought them in Cork. That night, he’d make passionate love to his wife and tell her how much he missed her and how much he loved her.

But here he was, thirty-five years old, and he had nothing. He had no one. Of course, his family loved him. He never questioned that at all. And he loved them back, maybe tenfold. He knew he had a massive capacity to love people, especially since little Rory and Dev had joined their family. Both now three years old, they never failed to warm his heart with their enthusiasm for life, their passion for learning new things, and their funny sense of humor.

He slowly opened the car door and grabbed his bag from the back seat. The door slammed shut harder than he had intended. With leaden feet, he plodded slowly to the kitchen door and let himself in.

Predictably, his mam was in the throes of boiling a kettle for a cup of tea and placed a still-warm apple tart on the table. The aroma made his mouth water.

“Heard you drive up.” His mother turned to him, a loving smile plastered across her face. She stood on tiptoes and threw her arms around his shoulders. “How are you, my love? I’ve missed you.”

As he always did, he picked his mother up like she weighed a feather and swung her around the kitchen, her feet swinging and her laugh ringing out. He kissed her head, loving the familiar scent of her shampoo, then gently set her back down on the floor just as the kettle on the gas hob whistled.

“I’ve missed you too, Mam.”

She threw some tea leaves into the pot, poured boiling water in, and replaced the lid of the teapot. Then she turned and surveyed her oldest boy from top to toe.

“Oh, Liam. You don’t half look like a very handsome man all kitted out in those clothes. You should wear them more often.”

“And where would I wear them, Mam? To the dairy? Eh? To milk the cows in them?”

He saw a light, a mere speckle, extinguish in his mother’s eyes, and kicked himself for being such a grump. He hadn’t been in a bad mood for a whole week, and here he was, home less than a minute, and he was already hurting the woman he loved most in the world. He strained to form a smile, managing one that he thought would probably convince her he was just joking. “’Course, I’d have all those doe-eyed cows trying to get me to breed with ’em if I did that, to be sure.”

He held his breath. Moira Cullen was no dill. She knew him better than he knew himself, of that he was certain.

She gave a brief nod. “Well, that’d make for front page news in the Tipp Times now, wouldn’t it?” She reached down and rotated the tea pot three times while it sat on a trivet on her kitchen table, then picked it up and poured two cups of tea. “I made yer favorite. Apple and cinnamon tart.”

“Aw thanks, Mam. Ye do spoil me. I’ve really missed your home cooking.”

And so, the following hour passed pleasantly, Liam’s mother eager to know every detail of his week in Cork. She was interested in the course, in the other farmers who went, and of course, in the teacher. He obliged her, telling her every detail he could remember. A pang of guilt made its presence known when it came to telling her too much about Aislin. His mam was at first surprised the teacher was a woman, then, after she asked how old, she was in deep shock.

“What are they thinking, having a bit of a girl like that teaching fully grown men? I’m sure Father Flynn wouldn’t approve of that at all. Disgraceful.”

And so, Mrs. Cullen never found out how beautiful Aislin was. He didn’t tell her about her beautiful green-blue eyes, and the way the sunlight glinted on her hair at about three every afternoon as it peeped in through the western window of the training room, reflecting copper-red highlights around the room and brightening his whole day. He didn’t bother to tell her how the cadence of Aislin’s words, the timbre of her voice, lulled him into a total trance as surely as if she’d hypnotized him. And he certainly didn’t tell his mam that he knew as sure as night follows day that he’d fallen in love with the beautiful Aislin O’Neill.

Honor’s Debt

On a quest to make amends for a long-ago indiscretion, Honor unexpectedly discovers the one thing she’s been missing in her life.

Honor Quirk arrives in Ireland excited—and a bit anxious—about meeting up with the estranged family of her late great-grandmother. The welcome from the residents of Robinhill Farm, Dermot and Bryan, is confusing and far from comforting. One is warm, the other aggressive. The outwardly antagonistic Bryan makes it very clear he doesn’t want her there, branding her a gold digger.

Dermot, on the other hand, is delighted to meet her.

But Honor is no pushover and stands up to Bryan, letting him know that his bad attitude and trail of baggage have nothing to do with her. Despite their confrontational and hostile relationship, an undeniable attraction to each other creeps insidiously into the house on Robinhill Farm. They both desperately try to stifle the sparks, but living under the same roof makes it impossible. Unable to cope with the turmoil of living with Bryan, Honor runs away, straight into the arms of a charming newfound friend, Sean, who offers her a home—and love.

Shattered, Bryan finally takes control of his irrational belief that all women are evil, and fights to bring back the woman he loves. But is it too late?

While waving a few bottles and getting trolleyed?  No. Because Britain is an island and people have always come to that island. Maybe I count the odd Pictish ancestor…probably very odd..primarily my ancestors swept in from the sea. Vikings..yes the hereditary disease is there, Normans, mercenaries…ooh and Irish. They swept in at the height of the famine. conv

At that time Dundee was probably a quite nice place to live. Its population in 1830 was 40000. A new jute mill had been opened. It needed 5000 workers. It got them overnight. And more. From the hunger fields across the sea.  The affect on the infrastructure of a town unprepared for what hit it was horrendous. I look at the census records of 1851 and see my famine ancestors living 12 to a shed in the arse-end of some ‘land’ (what the makeshift boarding hours that sprung up were called)  and doing 14 housr a day, or whatever the hell they were,  stints  in jute millsconv

and think…obviously their situation had not improved much.     By 1900 the population was  170000.

Anyway, the important thing….the point of this blog, like the city itself they were survivors. So yeah, Morgans, Lees, Colemans and MOORES, hell yes, I do feel entitled to raise a glass to you. Did I just say one? Time to get green….
