Right dudes, that’s enough. Paul Andruss, in the short time I have known him, has proved to be a wonderful author and a very kind and supportive friend. I love his blogs. They are fun and informative and I’m enjoying his choices
Paul is also writer in residence over at Sally Cronin’s blog
Writer in Residence- Paul Andruss https://smorgasbordinvitation.wordpress.com/writer-in-residence-writer-paul-andruss/
The posts are always a treat.
So? Without further ado, here’s my five and why out of all the music I’ve listened to and loved– and music has always been a huge thing in my life– I have chosen these pieces. The first I’ve got here twice because the first vid is only the tap dance–I can’t find the whole thing. But the tap dance? Well, let’s just say they don’t do them like this any more. AS to why I have really chosen this…read on.
Why did I choose this piece? It’s not of my era at all. Because the music I grew up with was these oldies. We lived in a tough sink scheme and we had an old gramophone
No, it wasn’t. Shut yir gub. It kinda looked like this.
And piles of old 78s, which the wee boy next door and me, used to drop paper and plastic astronaut figures from the Rice Krispies box on and watch them spin to see what would happen. ( Usually a whack. ) Yeah of course vinyl was invented but these oldies were the background to my life. People had very little. My dad, who was high up in bomb disposal, had come out the army. He’d come back with my mum and sister from what was probably quite a glitzy life in Hongkong, to nothing. No job. No house. This music reminds me of my mum and dad who originally belonged to THIS 30’s glamorous era, at least on the surface when in fact they were from far, far, worse tough and harder, than what I grew up in. It was an era where cinema was a great escape and my hometown had a ton at that time.
Not long before my mum died, I had complimentary tickets to a special showing of Top Hat and I took her. I’m glad I did because she was enthralled. Before I get too sloppy..
‘I’m sorry I ate your fish,’ she said to him one night in the middle of a heated row after he’d weaved home from the local with a fish supper.
“So am I. I hope it chokes you,” said he.
It’s that dynamic I try to get at in my books.
Next.
Let us NOT underestimate this NOT written by The Beatles song when it was sung by them. Forget everything they went on to do. Imagine that we have NEVER known of them and what they gave the world. Okay? On that same ‘Radiogram’ Elvis was banned. We were not allowed to listen to ‘certain’ kinds of music. The staple diet was, ‘Bali Hi’ ( WE LISTEN EVERY NIGHT, EVERY DAY) ‘Shall We Dance,’ –nothing wrong with that as I once helped demonstrate to a hall full of kids to the horror of my own when I re-enacted that scene for a giggle. AND to quote the words in that musical, our staple diet was etc etc., and crooners.
SO my big sis goes away for the summer to work and she comes back, having met her future hubby, an art student. (Get this, the now world famous photographer, then just another art student, Albert Watson, was the best man at that wedding. ) And she whispers , ‘Come here.. .listen to this… You HAVE to listen to this. THIS is what is out there.’ And she puts on this sound that I have never heard –a very quickly snatched and scratched sound when our mum came in. I have to tell you, laugh all you like, but it was like a window on another world.
Talking windows, I include the above. It’s music that means something after all. I preferred T. Rex in their folksie days but then you could not dance with your pals when your folks were out, the music blaring, the lights down, the neighbours complaining to the police, to that. Hot Love and Jeepster now? A few years back at a Hogmanay Dance I bumped into a friend I have known since I was 6, (CLEARLY FROM THAT ERA) but don’t see often and the DJ was asking for requests. So I gave him those for a laugh. And know what??? Yep. My pal rushed over and we got on the floor. I like to think folks stepped back cos we could still do all the steps to both, from those days. Hell. Once danced, never forgotten. We did it for a challenge.
It was like how you will always be certain things inside, no matter what. Not always easy in life but vital as breathing. Forget that and you forget everything. I still love to blare out Jeepster when I am cooking and do all the steps, with the carving knife and all……. Doot, doot, doot, chopping the veggies. ( Neighbours can complain all they like. Big mistake.)
Give this next choice a moment…
Ok. So sometimes life takes a hard twist. Hell, show me the straight path and I will laugh. That is why I won’t bore you with the details. I have two versions here because it depends if you like noisy-ish or quiet.-Let’s just say I found something in the words and the tune.
So now we move on. Talking dark twists, Nick Cave’s life has had a few. A few years ago my younger girl came to me one night and she said, ‘I have something to tell you and I don’t know what to do.’ And I couldn’t be happier or more blessed about what she did do, despite being in the middle of a law diploma, despite having no money, despite her partner just having set up for himself and having no work. I have a lovely wee grandbaby who leaves me breathless every single time I see him. (And not cos he is a powerhouse.) He stills everything in me. AND, the funniest thing? He first heard this favourite of mine on my last birthday, where he came in shouting ‘Partay!’ and jammed the Cd player up full volume (can’t think who he takes that off at age two and a half ) and he went, ‘Nina, we dance,’ and every time he hears it, he goes, ‘Nina, dance wi me,’ and he stands there and takes my hands. He has had my heart since I first saw him at half past three in the morning of the difficult night he was born. He always will.
Nominations? Please. All of you try boiling your life to five songs, cos in a way that is what you are doing, have a go and post your choices. it is harder than you think. Even the dudes have shut it for once.
Lovely post Shey 🙂
Thanks for your memories ! 🙂 xox ❤
OOh I can do that sometimes xxxxx
Thank you Ralpha xxx
Hi there Shehanne! Thank you so much for the likes. You are indeed a power house! Very impressive lady! Now, I just have to decide which of your books to read first 🙂
AND YOU are way, way, too kind. I love following your blog. Thank you so much for this lovely comment. (I’ve put the carving knife down and stopped dancing to read it LOL!) I hope you have a lovely day xxxxx
Thank you! Here’s to enjoying the loveliness of the day 🙂
Exactly xxxxxxxxx
Beautiful post Shehanne
That is so kind. I usually get the hamsters on these things but I wanted to do this one. Thank you so much x
If I recorded people tap dancing then manipulate the sound there’s probably a piece of sound art to be made.
Now look at that. I love the way that they actually beat out whole bits of that tune in the tap section with no actual music. I will look forward to this
My mum just showed me how to tap dance. Not that I have any desire to take it up. She added that at school they wouldn’t let her do it with the other kids. Her style was too aggressive.
Your mum? An aggressive style? Bloody cheek. People just don’t like what’s different. I would love to see her tap dance.
No Donovan? Your hamsters will be concerned you know!
LOL!!! Ah ken!! I adore Catch the Wind. Alas this was a boil down of five songs that mean certain somethings, so I tried to look at ones that at some point in my life stood out, or defined that bit. If I had had to choose one more it would have Abba Super Trouper AND cos I am a big fan but cos that was the opening number at Mr and my engagement party .
Do you know I downloaded Catch the Wind from ITunes recently as I had lost all my early Donovan collection when ‘she’ made me get rid of my vinyl collection…it was true, the collection had followed us over our last three houses and lived in the attic in each, never played…anyway, the version I downloaded was a revised version with a different tune and was rubbish compared to the immaculate original.
Now MIke, between you and Lord Zoolon deeply upset re the nae Easter Egg, I am trying not to get involved!!! We have our vinyl collection although the retro player we had has bit the dust. Need to get another pronto. I have a version on a cd. I don’t have ITunes I just download ahem…and then make my own cds. I love listening to music when I’m cooking. But as you’ve seen there’s often bother with download and versions that kick about. It is a great song.
Interesting choices. Now I have to think. You know how much I hate to think!
Lesley, you can do it. I know you can xxxxxxx
😜
xxxxxx
Happy Esaster ! With love maxima
Happy Easter Maxima. Hope you had a great day xxxxx
Hie dear,
Some of them I had never listened to but then they proved to be lovely.
AW, Moushmi, thank you. So kind to take the trouble xxxxxx
It wasn’t one 🙂
Aw xxxxxxx
Oh my gosh, Shey, this is just too hard. I don’t think I could even begin. It’s like asking me what my top five books are. There’s just no way to narrow the field. But I love that you did! oxo
LOL, Pam my darling, it is really, REALLY damned hard. I mean, as I said to someone, Twist and Shout isn’t a fav but in terms of music that meant something, things I haven’t forgotten, it was and that is how I narrowed the field. But yet, this is a difficult one. Hope you had a great weekend x
Just cleaned out my garden and yesterday I took the kids to the American Museum of Visionary Art in Baltimore. Fabulous place. Really nice weekend. 🐣🐇
Sounds fabulous. It is always good to have a nice weekend, a start to finish one x
Brilliant post, excellent choices and more insight into Ms. Moore. Loved it! I’m also having a lot of trouble coming up with only five tracks. I do know Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty) and Nights in White Satin (Moody Blues) would be in there and, for a very sad reason, Moonlight Shadow (Mike Oldfield) but as for the other two…
Cat, this is actually murder to do. I am not that fond of Twist and Shout BUT in terms of a defining musical moment, a moment that meant something, a moment that I’ve not forgotten it had to go in there. Really really hard to get five. But thank you my darling for this truly lovely comment. Now and again I spill a little xxxx
You did fantastically well in boiling your life into five songs, Shey. So glad you included the broadway and the description of the old record player. I also grew up on a diet of broadway songs listened to on my Mom’s record player that she broad with her to South Africa. My all time favourites were/are Mame, My Fair Lady and Cabaret.
brought not broad – oops – I blame the hamsters [smile]
You can blame em all you want my darling Robbie. This was really hard to do. Mame eh? I know that one. It’s brill. So’s Cabaret. I was not going to leave that bit of my life out. xxx
Awww I love your stories of when you were a kid and your Mum & Dad Shey. Lovely choices :0) xx
Kate, my darling. Thank you You will note there’s no Oliver though! The dudes will kill me. Trillion billion times do I love thee for the reblog and popping over asap to look.
Reblogged this on Kate McClelland.
Wow, wow, wow what an absolutely bloody fantastic selection! I am totally knocked out by both the choice of songs and the accompanying narrative. There is so much here to love. So grab a cuppa because you might be a while.
Kicking off with the incomparable Amy Winehouse was genius. Beautiful reggae version- you know on this her voice really reminds me of Billie Holiday- what a loss.
Equally Lullaby of Broadway- isn’t amazing that we used to watch all these oldies on Sunday afternoons on TV as kids. It is like another world now. I was so glad when Roxy music first came on the scene and made this period briefly fashionable again – like the Fred Astaire movies. They even used to play them in the disco.
Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane Shey- you are right there ain’t nothing like it.
Lovely memories too of going to see Top hat with your mum. I actually found my mum’s death certificate to day while clearing out some paper work. These are your memories not mine but to be honest this choice and its reason could not be more appropriate.
The thing about your dad and mum and the fish is bloody hilarious. Again brought back some of the fights with my parents, like the time mum got a wallpaper Dad didn’t like so he papered the room with the paper upside down… He was a sailor so she goes and pastes all his nautical maps over the wallpaper! Like you We didn’t have a lot growing up, but we always seemed to have enough and always have love even when we were killing each other!
And yes I can categorically say that the banter of your mum and dad’s rows do echo in your writing. as soon I a read it,.. even before I read you comment… I clicked!
Now I never realised the Beatles didn’t write Twist and Shout. Do you remember queing up to see Help on the pictures? I was too young for a Hard Days night!
Like you I much preferred early T. Rex and Tyrannosaurus Rex to the later Boogie stuff. We will have to have a chat about that one day.. (she came like a Seagull Woman… one day) Ok I’ll shut up about that now. But the last album I really loved was Electric Warrior! Jeepster is a great choice equally Get it On. or How about the romantic Life’s a Gas?
Dishwalla- Had never heard of them but glad I have now. It is a lovely song and very moving lyrics. A very nice share. Thanks
Nick Cave is a very underrated artist and this is a lovely love song. I love the slightly out of tune flute breaks like an orchestra starting up. What you said about your daughter and your grandson was absolutely beautiful. The preciousness of the relationship and the bond of absolute love is palpable.
Thanks for being such a bloody mate and having great taste in music. A challenged not only well taken up but triumphantly delivered!
Loads a luv Paul
XXX
Oh Paul, you darling. I can’t believe reading this that we do share so much. Firstly, I adore Roxy Musi. I have seen Bryan Ferry a few times live. (Me and a pal once danced on a set of tables in platforms to Virginia Plain, just cos we felt like it.) I admit now I did see Hard Day’s Night. I think the woman next door who did not have two halfpennies to rub together, in fact no-one knew she wasn’t married to the guy until the day he died suddenly and his wife arrived with a van and cleared the house leaving her and her two little girls, bare floorboards to live on. Anyway, she scraped money and took her daughters and me and we did queue round the block and everyone was screaming at the screen. More confessions here. I adore Life’s a Gas. It ‘s the B side of Jeepster and I have that 45 still! Just like I have all these 78’s. You are so kind to say you can see that dynamic of my mum and dad in my writing. Your tale of that wallpaper is hysterical. They dinnae make them like them like that any more. Times were hard but you never thought you had nothing because no-one had anything either. I love Amy Whitehouse. She was a talent cut short and she adored these ‘old’ singers as I do. Dishwalla I discovered by chance and just loved their sound. I said I this was a fav on facebook a few years back and their lead singer was kind enough to thank me for remembering it and choosing it. I have all their albums but especially like the sound on Opaline. Nick Cave is underrated, although he has a dedicated die-hard following. He’s been on the go a long time so there’s a vast choice of different kinds of Nick. Songs like this, folk ballads, like Henry Lee, quite hard rock sounding numbers, love songs, fast, slow, I love being able to take my pick. Paul, thank you for asking me to do this and leaving such a great comment. x
Dear Shey, You are absolutely right we do share so much in common. I only say Roxie once at St George’s hall in Liverpool when they were just starting out. A few years later I got to know the promoter.. I was knocking round in a band.. and he said he got them for £25. We Hung round the dressing room like a bunch of junkies and got to speak to Ferry and Eno we were like 14! Same year I saw Ziggy at the Top Rank In Sept or Oct I think. It was a great time to be a kid. Bolan unfortunately I never saw Don’t know why as I loved Tyrannosaurus Rex.. but also saw Cockney Rebel about 3 times.. .massive fan especially of the first few albums… and of course Gabriel’s Genesis.. We hitched to Manchester and Couldn’t get home so Slept in the Odeon which was showing 5 horror films back to back all night long. Our parents must have been out of their minds…. of course we never gave them a second thought. A real old trip down memory lane there. I am loving having as a friend.
WOW. I LOVE that story of the cinema and the five horror films back to back. I think of you all waking up zombified cos it is like one of these sleep experiments. Ferry was very glam at the time but a diff glam from the glam rockers. he was obvi bringing his art student roots to the table. First time I saw him was prob not that long ago in terms of his career. Anyway he cancelled the show ten mins before start up cos he had something wrong with his throat. it was a pretty brave move in Dundee I got to tell you. So we all headed for the pub. My older girl who likes Roxy Muisc said she would never go out with me again. She was appalled at my whistling to get served in the bar queue in the actual venu then putting this old drunk letch in his place outside by going ‘ Come on then…’ in my best Fintry girl where I grew up.. tones , disappearing to the loos in the pub, opening the fire door by mistake and wandering round the Dundee pends for ten mins before coming back in the front door. But the best was me and my pal singing (and dancing) Roxy songs at the bus station. But then her hubby turned up to pick us up. he was in the police so we totally started behaving. When I got home I discovered I had been walking half the night on only one heel. That was the first time I never saw Ferry. But then he came back did the show and it was brill. Then he came again and did the Dylanesque tour. In typical Dundee fashion–Dundee folks are kind something else– they were going, ; Eh never f’ing pyed tae hear Bre-un dahun Dulun. Eh fe-un pyed tae hear hum sung Bre-un.’
Of coruse not a lot of folks come to the Caird Hall. Saw Elton John there once, got his autograph. Tom Paxton. The Proclaimers. Deacon bleu. We used to be pals with their lead years back before he went off to Glasgow. i once played piano with him too.
I am so SO loving being palz too Paul. Truly. it is great sharing stories too. x.
I meant to add, that my grandbaby’s other song that he fair likes to dance to is , As the World Turns,’ Roxy Music. He insists we twirl to the fancy bits at the start.
God this is getting incestuous..I just loved Dylanesque….. Great story about the grandbaby too. Doing some work tonight but Should clear the decks and write proper tomorrow! Luv PX
LOL!!! I dinnae ken about the Dundee punrers but I liked Dylanesque. Anyway ‘Bre-un’ has long been a soloist in his own right and choosing to highlight certain kinds of music. End of. x
Hilarious, informative and touching my friend. Interesting choice of songs, most I’m not familiar with but loved your sharing of memories, especially the one of your wee one, ‘Nina wanna dance’. too precious! And the dudes . . . well the dudes, eventually they were absorbed in the moment, lost for words? Not sure. 🙂 xoxoxxo Happy Easter my Lovely. ❤
The dudes…..well, apart from ‘Our Day will come’ they would avhe picked things like, ‘A mouse lived in a windmill…we killed it. I couldn’t really let them near this post AND I have leverage right now. They will be back whining and complaining next post. Lovely to see you, oh mighty dude fav. Hope your Easter was good x
Lol, great song choices for the dudes. Yes, it seems you’ve got the upper hand with them momentarily Shey. Easter was large and lovely, thanks my Lovely! 🙂 xoxo
The moment will be fleeting Debby. I am sure of it. Then they will be back with Hamsters and Tigers and Bears, oh my…. Glad you had a nice Easter. xxxx
Reblogged this on Smorgasbord – Variety is the spice of life and commented:
Last week several of us had great fun revisiting music that meant something to us and Shehanne and The Dudes (a great band name if ever there was one) has put together her five picks in one post. Brilliant choices and coming from the same era I can relate to the restricted playlist we had at the time. Boy did I enjoy the 60s. Anyway not only do you get some great tracks but Shey also shares some snippets about why they are so valued. Enjoy #recommended
LOL… I love Shey and The Dudes…Move over 60s bands. Sally thank you so much for sharing. You are always so kind and I will be popping over asap too xxxx
With the music of these singers I’m a little out because I have not heard them. A difficult decision but I’m sure your books will reach the best port because your talent gives for much more.
AW, as ever, you are so, so, kind, my friend. The little dudes will be back next post. But if I had let them do this one, I shudder to think of their choices. xxxx I hope you had a lovely weekend
Gracias mil
A lovely, fun and interesting post, Shey! ❤
AW Carol, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx so much. it sure was a challenge xxxxx
Great choices, especially the Nick Cave.
Thank you So much xxxxxxxxxxxx I adore Nick Cave’s music. This was actually quite difficult but that one would always make my top 5 xx
Me too. Narrowing down to a top 5 is a real challenge. I think mine would change depending on my mood
I tried to anchor them to certain beacon moments in a way. I was saying that Twist and Shout isn’t really a favourite but in terms of that moment, of never hearing anything like that before, it was an OMG. The world is so changed it is hard to imagine. But yeah it’s not easy to boil things down.
Great…🤗🤗🤗👌👍
Eliza , thank you my darling xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Yr welcome ma’am…🤗🤗🤗
Goodnight…❤❤❤
I hope your dreams are a bit better xxxx
Aw, Shey, a fabulous post and a real tribute to past times that brings back so many memories for me too. Great choice of music – I know how essential it is to you, a big part of your life. I especially love the wonderful tap dancing and brilliant Busby Berkeley choreography – gives me goose pimples! And moving snippets from your own life. Thank you. xx
I HAD to have the Busby’s!! It was wonderful choreography, the most amazing number when you look at the amount of dancers involved. I have that whole track on a record, where there’s more than is here but I could not find the entire thing online. I am thrilled some of this is fair bringing back memories for folks. It was quite difficult to choose. I had to keep boiling down. Thank you for the lovely comment. So nice to see you xxx
I love the flute in Breathless, but the quiet version of Angels or Devils struck a chord in me. I’d never heard it and am grateful you included here. Thank you, lovely friend Shey. And thank you to the dudes for indulging you 🙂 💛
I couldn’t let the dudes do this one. As I said to Debby elsewhere they would do things like ‘A mouse lived in a windmill’…we keeled eet… SO really I had to jemmy this one from their paws. My lovely Tina, thank you so much for coming by and listening. I do love that slightly out of kilter flute in Breathless. (Sounds a bit like I play flute actually!) It’s as if it is tuning up, which I think is a great touch when it suddenly goes wham into the song. And I am glad you liked the quiet version of Angels and Devils. I prefer that version. I find the words very meaningful. And I can play it too. piano is my real instrument. I love a lot of that band’s music but that one is my fav. Thank you Tina, for the lovely comment x
Would love to hear you tickle the ivories, Shey. Although I dare not think how the dudes might react 🙂 💛
Not familiar with any such of them. But glad even for being introduced with. It must be a great collection and the best part is memory behind each one of them. Beautiful post❤
Purva, thank you so much for the lovely comment and taking the time to listen. I know many folks are not familiar with some of them. Trust me not to go for the obvious. I just listen to a ton of music–I taught it for many years and I don’t know if I have been without music in my life ever– so, I am afraid I even know the not so well known stuff!! It was hard to boil down to five, but yeah I went with the memories too .Lots of love xxx
Even I too share this beautiful hobby to listen music 🎶 . That’s why I found this post more interesting as I loved to read about. Love right back to you❤
Purva, your tweet was beautiful, thank you, I am loving that we share writing and music big time in our lives xxxxxxx
A lovely fascinating post, Shey and I like your eclectic choices and the tales behind them. I was particularly smitten with your story of your grandson, holding his hands out and wanting to dance with you. Precious precious moments. I was drifting away, trying to narrow my songs down to five and failed miserably – as one of your previous comments said, it is just as impossible as naming top five books!!
It is so, so hard, I confess I actually put my author’s cap on in terms of meat and heat focus, and killing darlings, although 2 of these songs would be in any top five of mine. I did it around the biz of light bulb moments for whatever reason and where I got my love of music from in the first place. I am so thrilled to read your comment, especially about my wee grandson. He also loves music, sings like a wee linty. The thing about that song too, a friend of 30 years–our kids grew up together etc– moved away last year to be near her new grandson. While she was swithering, I sent her the Breathless song link and said, this is how it will feel, so don’t doubt for a mo that you must make this move, so it was so funny that out of all the songs on the CD I had playing that night, wee Riley came running over on that one. Thank you for taking the time to read this and listen. I truly appreciate it xxxxxx
I enjoyed the Beatles’ song, “Twist and Shout” along with the story of taking your sweet Mum to the play, “Top Hat.” That evening sounds so wonderful.
You are a big “softy” with lovely heart, Shehanne.
Those little hamstahs make me chuckle and giggle.
Me? A softy? Nah,,,,, xxxxxxxxxxxxxx I must say that it was more ‘Twist and shooooooscratch, get that off.’ ‘What is that you are listening to?’ ‘Nothing Mum.’ Lovely to see you my darling xxxxxxx
The songs were a rich and ripe collection which could have had me talking to a storm in person, . . . Over a drink, . . . xoxoxo
HEE HEE. The best way my darling. The very best way. x (Especially if you can still to the Twist!)
Die Erste Eslarner Zeitung, xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx for the reblog.

I don’t know if I could match my life to songs.. ackkkk haha 😉 Thanks Shey for another fun post and for introducing me to Paul, who I didn’t know otherwise (am I living under a rock?!!) ~Hugs, Shey, big hugs!
Of course you could match your life to songs. You are a writer, so you focus on the meat and heat and you kill your darlings basically. xxxxx Paul is super. A rock in terms of support with a knowledge that knocks me dead! A great way of putting that knowledge across and a talented writer. There you go. Hugs my darling and thank you xxxxxxx
Love the cahllenge and Amy Winehouse was such genius… so sad that she is gone under so sad circumstances, being so young & talented.
I am absolutely obsesed with Lana del Rey lately. Do you like her music. I guess I could match all my life “exclusively” to her songs, at least given my most recent obsession 😀 I leave you with “Love” by Lana: https://youtu.be/3-NTv0CdFCk Sending hugs across the miles, dear She 😀 ❤
I do indeed like her music, my darling. I very seldom don’t like an artist. There is always, at the very least, one track to like by anyone. Now, you doing a match of your life to five Lana’s would be something. (Just saying…….) (Hint…hint) Love to you too all the way across the miles xxxx
Yes… Maybe I should give it a try…. Why not… I am saving the link to your post alongside awards, etc… I´ll probably do it (this year! 😉 ) Hugs!
I didn’t nominate specifically cos sometimes folks just don’t have the time, or are busy blogging planned things, so there’s no pressure. But it is a good challenge to do. It is always great to see song choices and why. it gets readers thinking and finding new artists and songs. So I am hoping that a few take it on xxx
What a lovely classic collection!! They don’t make them like this anymore, but I wish they did! Will definitely take a listen to the tap dancing version- “lullaby of Broadway” 🙂
They don’t make tap dancing ones like this any more. The scale, the jaw dropping wave moments. I had not seen the actual routine for some time. I had forgotten how stunning it is in terms of ‘art.’ and dance. Lovely to see you my friend and thank you for coming by xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
My pleasure 🙂
xxxxxx
As I read this, a collection of songs spurred forth in my head: songs of life, and songs of inspiration for writing. I totally need to do this challenge next month!
And thanks for sharing these slices of your life, Shey. You’re amazing. xxxxxx
Oh no, no….if only. I just spill the odd bit now and then when it comes to life slices. I thought of you with post and I hope you WILL take it up and post cos I know music means a lot to you too and you do all these writer music posts xxxxxxx
Well I enjoy your odd bits 😉 And I will! It’s already given me some awesome ideas, but I won’t have time to really write this until my term break next month. But my mind’s made up to do it! xxxxxxxxxxxxx
I can’t wait now to see your picks. They are sure to be awesome. My appetite is fair whetted…. (Glad you like the odd bits.)
oh music! I miss it! nowhere to put the hi-fi in the new place… 😦 Nice to read about your choices tho!
NOOO. you can’t be without my darling. I got a music in my kitchen but our hi-fi broke when we got the new floor in the living room/ Gonna get that sorted asap though. So hope things are going good for you. The very best of in your new place xxxx x
Hi Shehanne! Wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying Lady Fury!!! Enjoy your weekend 🙂
OMG, OMG. YOU have totally made my weekend. That is so kind of you. So kind to read my stuff and to come by and leave me this lovely message. Thank you THANK you, my friend. May your weekend be nothing short of great xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
🙂
You never have comments on your blog. So I will say it here. I love the way you skip across galaxies with such ease in your writing. That one about the crystal…I bookmarked it, cos I think it is brilliant, the set up of the shop, the back home bit, everything that follows. xxx
Thanks for sharing the music and the emotional moments of your life, dear Shey. It was a very touching post!
I love some of the classic tap dancing stuff too. One of my favourite movies is White Christmas. And Nick Cave is totally brilliant. The first song I heard by him was ‘Brother my cup is empty’ which just blew me away. I have to admit I don’t listen to his stuff very often because he’s so serious and I usually like my music on the jaunty side, but this song and other songs I’ve heard by him are genius.
Ah Carolee my darling, the things we have in common, from tap dancing to Nick Cave, even what we think of Nick Cave!! Thank you for the lovely, lovely comment. I was gonna give this to the dudes but I shuddered to think of what they’d choose, how they would eat everything and the rest of it, so I didn’t. I do agree re Nick Cave. His last album –clearly written in grief for his son– was a bit too heavy going for me. It wouldn’t stop me listening to him though. There’s stuff of his I love unconditionally and others ones I pass on. I admire the fact he’s been at the game so long but keeps his creativity fresh and isn’t afraid to try things, unlike some bigger ‘beasts’ who are turning stuff that is toe bunching, it’s so out of touch. xxxxx
WOW! I’m so impressed you were able to pick five. I could pick five favs every hour of every day but five for my entire life, no way! Maybe I could broaden the category and pick five artists, which would include their entire catalogues. But that’s about as good as it would get. Thanks for including the links, I enjoyed listening.
Ann, I bet you could pick if you brought your writer’s eye on this. I don’t especially like Twist and Shout but I was doing it by beacon moments, by what was the backdrop to my early life, by what defines us in life. Otherwise yep……it’s impossible. Like any writer, I killed darlings in this post. I even chose Lullaby over The very Thought of You by the incomparable Billie Holliday, because of Mum and Dad’s love of old films of that vintage. I am fair glad you enjoyed listening. THANK You for listening xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
